Understanding the animals you are going to see in the Bush in ZImbabwe

Most people are interested to see the big 5.  All wild animals are dangerous, but obviously plant eaters are normally more likely to run away than to attack as would a meat eater.  The problem is, there are some large plant eaters such as the Elephant, Rhino, Hippoy and Buffalo who do not run away but prefer to attack. To understand how fast they are we put some interesting facts below which should help you understand why it is better not to face one of these animals in the wild without a trained professinal.  Put your saftey first.  The animal will not feel sorry for you.

  • Humans (average person): 9-12 mph (14-19 km/h)
  • Dog: 20-45 mph (32-72 km/h), depending on breed
  • Horse: 25-50 mph (40-80 km/h), depending on breed and distance
  • Lion: 50 mph (80 km/h) 
  • Cheetah: 60-70 mph (97-113 km/h)
  • Leopard: 36 mph (58 km/h)
  • Buffalo: 35 mph (56 km/h)
  • Elephant: 15 mph (24 km/h)
  • Rhino: 30 mph (48 km/h)
  • Hippo: 19 mph (30 km/h)
