The Mbira - a traditional African musical instrument.

 

The Mbira is a traditional African musical instrument that is also known as a thumb piano. It is played with the thumb and forefinger of each hand, the tuning of the instrument varying from district to district. 

The Mbira is an integral part of traditional African music, especially in the countries of Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa. It is a small, portable instrument that is made from a wooden soundboard and metal tines. The tines are arranged in a staggered pattern, and the keys are of different lengths to create different pitches.  The mbira usually consists of twenty-six rods, and covers three octaves. 

The sound produced by the Mbira is often described as ethereal, haunting, and melodic. It is used in various traditional ceremonies, such as weddings, funerals, and religious rituals. The Mbira is also used for healing and spiritual purposes.

There are many different types of Mbira, with various tuning systems, ranging from pentatonic to heptatonic scales. The most common type is the mbira dzavadzimu, which is played by the Shona people of Zimbabwe. The instrument has a deep cultural significance, and it is often passed down from generation to generation as a family heirloom.
